Synesthesia Blog

Synesthesia is something that I find very interesting because it makes you realize that everyone sees things differently. In Daniel Tammet’s case he sees the world in a way that not many people do, by associating things such as numbers and colors with specific shapes among other things. Personally, I feel like this would be overwhelming, constantly having to associate two seemingly unrelated things. The way I imagine it feels almost like what dreams are like, where things make little to no sense. Seeing that I don’t have synesthesia like Tammet does, I can’t really say too many things about what it would be like to live with it. Another way I can try to visualize what having synesthesia is like it by looking at art, such as the art that Tammet created. One form of art that might be even better than just a painting would be film. With film we are able to express feelings and emotions, which might make it easier for someone without synesthesia to have an idea what it would really be like. The video we watched in the first week of class is a great example, with different shapes and colors all associated with different sounds. When you really think about it, living with synesthesia might open your eyes to the world, seeing beauty in things that you would normally just pass by and pay no attention to. Also other things like math may be easier. Tammet gave an example of how he is easily able to do multiplication since he is able to visualize the numbers. When it’s all said and done synesthesia may not always be the most helpful thing in the world, but being able to do some tasks more easily than an average person, and see the world in a different way might make it worth it.
